The Black Flame, lyrics written and performed by the musical group Renaissance (sometime in the 1970s). Not my work, but the inspiration for the image above.
******************************************
I am words, I am speaking
I never heard my conclusion
Lost in my confusion
In illusion
Lost inside the picture frame

I'm not to blame
I didn't see the black flame
I'm not ashamed
It's poetry the black flame
I'm rearranged
It's changing me the black flame
Burns my blackened brain

I am strong, I am leaving
I never knew I'd feel the need so
Where I'll go, I'll turn the flow
I could not know
Screams inside the burning pain

With spinning head
It's underhand the black flame
It lies inside
I turned and I ran the black flame
On me it fed
I understand the black flame
Burns my blackened brain

Run from me, don't you see
That we are one and I'm a part of you
Get away, anyway
I'm still a secret in the heart of you
And I'm the burning in your soul

Now I'm weak, I am losing
I never thought I'd stop trying
I'm just a lie, just a sign, just a cry
Just a symbol of the game

Suspended pain
I cannot face the black flame
Intended dear
I cannot trace the black flame
Extended
Reaching into space the black flame
Burns my blackened brain

Image was started in Apophysis, tweaked in PSP 10, picked a random point then used the fill function right and left mouse buttons, added flame tubing then made it black and white, then "negatived" it.

Renaissance was the source of several of the songs that echo through my life, whether I wanted them to or not. If you have never heard this or other works by them, it's hard to describe the music... sometimes it's almost old
English folksy, sometimes powerful piano and orchestral, sometimes rock-ish. A lot of their songs are unexpectedly mystic/curious/tragic. This particular song was only revealed to me of late when I found a double collection CD of theirs, and listened to it. Hearing it would not seem to indicate the dark note the lyrics portray. Lead vocalist Annie Haslam has, to me, one of the clearest and most powerful vocal presences I've had the pleasure of cranking up or listening to quietly. Another song, Ocean Gypsy, seems to have portrayed symbolically the relationship between myself and a lady over the last 2 decades. But that would take much more skill than I have uncovered so far to envision like the image above allowed me to for this posting.

I love Renaissance so much. Black Flame has been one of my favorites. (though not so much as Ashes are Burning)

If you look on Amazon you can pretty much find all of their old albums on CD. My mom and I ordered a bunch of them.

Another thanks for the comment and the fav. I happened on their 2 CD Best Of, 1001 Nights, simply by accident when I was testing software used to order CDs and DVDs. I had been introduced to their music many, many years ago by a roommate, and while their songs haunted me, and a rough-recorded cassette provided a few of their songs that I liked, it wasn't until I got this set that I was able to have such a full sample and of course the grand nostalgia that I was around and capable of going to one or more of their concerts, should I have had the gumption to look up their schedules at the time. Oh well.
Thanks again.
